ESXi Server 5 für RAID Betrieb umrüsten (ASUS KC MA-D8 mit ASUS Pike)

Upgrade ESXi Server 5 for RAID operation (ASUS KC MA-D8 with ASUS Pike)

As already indicated, the KCMA-D8 is capable of running a RAID daughter card control to support hardware RAID. The time to do this has now arrived. My ESXi has been running for quite some time with 4 2GB hard drives from Hitachi that are designed to run in a RAID. ASUS provides for its motherboard various models of the Pike card:
– ASUS Pike 2008 for RAID levels 0,1,10
– ASUS Pike 2008/IMR for RAID levels 0,1,5,10
– ASUS Pike 2008 for RAID levels 0,1,5,10 and onboard cache
Unfortunately, there is little evidence or even tests on the net about the performance influence on the vmware guest of running a RAID on the ESXi host

Maybe I’ll try different RAID levels once, only to be able to run a performance test. That is, 4 drives in RAID 0, RAID 10 and RAID 5

Upgrade ESXi Server from v 4.1 to v 5 (ASUS KCMA-D8)

Ok,
here’s the plan.
The ESXi 4.1 is installed on a USB stick.
Attached to my ESXi 4 are 4 SATA disks on one are actually only ISO-images, one is for storing VM machine and a VM disk is active. The plan is to install a RAID later times there.

The question is whether to “migrate” (install the 5 over the 4 aka “migrating”) or to to a fresh install of version 5. Not knowing if the motherboard and everything else is supportet.
The plan therefore is the following:
– Shutdown ESXi 4.1
– Detach the SATA disky
– Install v5
– e-attach an “unendangered” disk (eg with the ISO’s)
– Does everything work?
– If so, then add the other disks and tighten the configuration of the VM inventory
– If not, then the old USB stick should g back, power up the old system and search for a better way …
-> USB image backup pull
-> Move the image to second stick
-> Test the second stick
-> Try it
-> Migration

Well, here’s what I did:

0) documatation of the configuration of the virtual machine
1) Attempts to make an image of the USB stick (USB Image Tool from Alexander Beug), restore the image to a 2nd usb stick. The new stick unfortunately was not bootable. With “Image-copy” is here probably meant just the files.
2) Put an emptyy USB stick into the system, the v5 installation CD into a external USB DVD-ROm. SATA drives disconnected. Start the ESXi ISO v5 installation.
3) The installation went relatively smooth. No problems.
4) I installed theclient on a laptop the new client and tested the connection. Unlike the ESXi4: a second network card is now seen as “redundant network connection”, apparently I can not configure a separate network with separate virtual switched network.
5) Everything went well. Import the license. In the client go to “Configuration> Licensed Features and then click Edit License (have previously created with vmware.com at hand) and enter it.
6) Enable Virtual Machine again (after documentation from point 0) and everything is ready to go.

The compatibility with the ASUS KCMA-D8 is fine. No problems at all.

Viewsonic V350, continued

– just Google’s translation –

Hello,

to make it short, the Traveler by IBM for the company e-mails, calendar and contacts still does not work. Other bugs, such as once in 24 Rebbot or problems with the back-to-go network of SIM cards remain. There seems to be that you have taken care of at ViewSonic first to migrate to Gingerbread and (hopefully) now takes care of the bugs. So it has no future as an enterprise that is set. A few other features would help as well. I collect just under www.facebook.com/V350.2be.improved suggestions. This I will then forward it to the product management.

Ah yes, the Traveler’s problem is already at work in IBM officially (ViewSonic because I do not): It seems to me indeed a bug in the implementation of an act of parameters in the V350.

Viewsonic V350: Android smartphone with 2 SIMs

Aktuelles Dual-SIM Smartphone von ViewSonic

– just a Google translation –

Hello, about 3 weeks ago I had my BlackBerry Bold released into the company. This was also the old Bold, somewhat decrepit.

As a new device, I had decided against an iPhone. Not a bit, because I think the bad units or something … I’m with the hype somehow become not so warm. A mobile phone as Statussmbol … Hip and stylish. Anyway. Besides, I have a stomach ache to the monoculture, the Apple bereibt there. If you look closely it sometimes, because of course, Apple takes a huge ecosystem of high … it comes to Apple is a must.

Not that that would be completely different from ANDROID, but a bit. Here is the Apple id, where the google id. But if you wanted, you could bring about a purely alternative Android stores but a lot of liberties, if only to find someone.

A second SIM card is cool. Anyone who has children in the Teen-Age …. Aldi has the whole school-Mobile, because you can send text messages for 3.99 € and call each other, until the doctor comes. And texting is at that age remains important. My daughter simst only very rarely, if for example I at T-Mobile and Vodafone have, because it costs money. So I had been a second phone. The number at some point of T-Mobile to Aldi pulled over and everything fine. The Elus network is in my opinion, by miles better than the O2 network. For some reason O2 hate last year even won a test or less. Probably as many have since switched to O2, that there really … I do not know what they do. Poor coverage, poor field strengths, poor call quality, slow data transfer rates … I can judge well, because my phone has 2 indicators for signal strength, one for each SIM 😉

The initial delivered ANDROID 2.2.2 has been drilled in some places by ViewSonic, to meet the requirements of a dual-SIM device. These include for example two buttons for phone calls, one for each SIM. I select a contact and then press either the green receiver, stands in the SIM1 or SIM2 is where.

On the stage, I now hold, however, and install the update to 2.3.7 (aka Gingerbread). Who would do that too:

There have been an error: “Does not support OTA” or something like that. Do not panic, there are what the program is incorrect. There was just no update and that was apparently the only error that had programmed the boys. Now the update is there, running the DL and let’s see what happens.

To be continued.

ESXi server on ASUS KCMA-D8

Time for a new ESXi machine. Homebrewed. 12 Core, 32GB RAM, running with the free ESXi and at all … cheap.

ESXi Server DFI LanParty JR 790GX

Since you really rarely (unless you’re a gaming fan) want to use that much power on the desktop, I had decided to rebuild my desktop PC as an ESXi Server. With an AMD Phenom 4Core and 8 GB RAM that should go quit smoothly for my needs. Unfortunately, there really is not much evidence with which hardware is it going and not with what … But to make it to the point, it works. Only the LAN port doesn’t, here I used an Intel PRO/1000 GT.

AMD Chipset: Northbridge AMD 790GX, Southbridge AMD SB750,  Integrated ATI Radeon HD 3300. SATA ports work fine as well.

The ESXi I installed from the CD directly onto a flash drive, so there is no harddisk “wasted” for that. The ESXi directly formats the disks in the system in it’s own format for the VIRTUAL machines.

Hello world!

Welcome to my blog universe . Everything here is a bit influenced technologically that has to do with my career. and my hobby. At least with one of my hobbies. And yes, this is the first article. Until I start really, it takes some time but now I'm off and trying to leave important things for posterity 😉 Andrew.
